Measure the product, the connections and the person using it.

A room can fit the appliance on paper and still fail when the door, hoses, plumbing, drawer or user clearance is added.

How deep is a washing machine?

Many full-size front-load machines are roughly 27 inches wide and approximately 30–34+ inches deep, but doors, controls and hoses can increase the installed projection. Compact European-style equipment is often narrower and shallower. Top-load models need vertical lid clearance.

How much room should you plan?

  • Use the exact manufacturer cut sheet—not the showroom label.
  • Add the required rear clearance for water hoses, drain, electrical/venting and vibration.
  • Add front clearance for the open door plus a person and laundry basket.
  • For side-by-side units, include the manufacturer’s side spacing and door swing.
  • For stacked units, use an approved stacking kit and verify total height, controls and service access.
Safe planning method: draw the appliance box, actual open door, connections and walking clearance at full scale. A nominal 30-inch-deep closet is often not enough for a 30-inch-deep washer once hoses and the door are included.

How high can a shelf go above the washer?

First confirm machine height and whether detergent is loaded from the top. Front-load machines are commonly around 39 inches high, but pedestals add height. A shelf must stay reachable, clear the door/control/detergent drawer and allow service. Adjustable shelving is safer than selecting one universal height before the machine.

Washer water and drain height

The outlet box and standpipe must comply with the appliance instructions and plumbing design, including trap and vent requirements. Do not choose the height only for appearance. Have the plumber coordinate the selected machine, box, standpipe, shutoffs, drain capacity, waterproof pan/drain strategy and access before rough inspection.

How much space does a toilet need?

A common minimum planning rule is at least 15 inches from the toilet centerline to a side wall or obstruction—30 inches total width. Front clearance, door swing, grab bars/accessibility and local code are separate requirements. A door that clears the bowl when closed can still block safe use.

  • Draw the actual toilet projection; elongated bowls often project farther.
  • Show the fully open door and hardware.
  • Consider an outswing or pocket door where appropriate, but coordinate privacy, structure and plumbing.
  • Verify flange location before tile and cabinet installation.

Common lengths include about 54, 60, 66 and 72 inches, but exterior length does not tell you the interior bathing well. Compare inside floor length, back angle, water depth, overflow, capacity, filled weight and how the user gets in and out.

Shower fixture choices

  • Wall showerhead: angled spray from the wall; simple and familiar.
  • Rain head: overhead spray; needs correct ceiling/wall arm position and adequate pressure/flow.
  • Hand shower on slide bar: height can move; useful for cleaning, children and seated use.
  • Body sprays: multiple outlets that require pressure, flow, valve and drain planning.
  • Thermostatic valve: controls temperature; separate volume controls may operate individual outlets.
  • Pressure-balance valve: helps limit sudden temperature changes, often with combined control.

More outlets may require a larger supply, properly sized valve and drain. Decide which outlets must run together before rough plumbing.

What is a wall-mount faucet?

A wall-mount faucet frees the counter, but rough-in height and reach must match the final sink and countertop.

The valve and spout are installed in the wall. It looks clean and leaves the deck open, but the rough-in must coordinate finished wall thickness, sink centerline, spout reach, splash, handle clearance and future service access.

How do you match faucet, drain and trim colors?

Use one manufacturer’s coordinated finish when an exact match matters. Finish names are not universal: one brand’s brushed brass may differ from another’s. If mixing, request physical samples for faucet, shower drain, supply trim, cabinet hardware and accessories under the bathroom lighting.

What is a pot filler?

A pot filler is a cold-water faucet mounted near the cooktop to fill pots without carrying them from the sink. It adds convenience but also creates a water connection over a cooking area without a drain. Coordinate reach, folding clearance, backsplash, shutoffs and leak risk; it is optional, not automatically “high-end.”

Which garbage disposer?

Choose from household size, food habits, noise, septic/municipal restrictions, sink material and cabinet space—not horsepower alone. Compare continuous-feed vs. batch-feed operation, sound insulation, stainless grinding components, warranty, electrical switch/air switch and service availability. Confirm dishwasher connection and trap layout before final plumbing.
